Dynamics of white pine-hemlock-hardwood forests
|
Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) is a structurally important species that forms a super-canopy in the hemlock-hardwood forests that dominate northeastern North America. This species has been largely removed from this forest type and is now a restoration target in the Great Lakes region. We are conducting research to support restoration efforts and understand the dynamics that allowed white pine to establish and persist in this forest type where fires are extremely rare.
Research Questions: How do early-successional tree species maintain a presence in landscapes where intervals for stand-replacing disturbance are very long relative to the lifespan of the trees? What is the effect of overstory and understory competition and other stand and site characteristics on the growth and competitive success of white pine regeneration?
